SAN RAFAEL, CA — Firefighters rescued a dog and prevented a kitchen fire from spreading throughout a San Rafael home Saturday night, officials said.
Neighbors called 911 shortly after 7 p.m. on Saturday after hearing smoke alarms activate inside the single-story home on Mabry Way and seeing smoke coming from the eaves.
Firefighters arrived and said they found heavy smoke coming from the eaves and attic area. They forced entry and encountered thick, black smoke coming from the kitchen.
Crews searched the home and confirmed no one was inside. A dog was found in the backyard, and firefighters took steps to keep it safe while they battled the fire.
The fire was located in the kitchen and quickly brought under control. It was contained to that area and did not spread to the rest of the home, officials said.
The kitchen sustained significant fire damage, while the remainder of the residence suffered moderate to heavy smoke damage. The home was determined to be uninhabitable.
The two occupants returned while firefighters were still at the scene and were assisted in retrieving personal belongings and reuniting with their dog.
The American Red Cross provided the displaced occupants with temporary lodging and other essential assistance.
No injuries were reported, and neighboring properties were not damaged, officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
