SAN RAFAEL, CA — A fire that started when cooking oil ignited on a stove at a San Rafael apartment was extinguished by the building's sprinkler system Tuesday, preventing the flames from spreading beyond the kitchen, officials said.
San Rafael firefighters were dispatched around 1:11 p.m. to the apartment complex at 1040 Cresta Way. When they arrived, the fire had already been extinguished by the sprinkler system.
"This incident is another example of the critical role residential fire sprinkler systems play in protecting lives and property," said Fire Chief Abraham Roman. "A single sprinkler activated and extinguished the fire before it could spread beyond the kitchen, preventing what could have been a much more serious fire."
The tenant suffered a minor burn while trying to remove the pan from the stove and was treated by paramedics. No other injuries were reported, and the tenant was able to return to the apartment.
The apartment sustained very minor smoke and water damage, estimated at less than $1,000. There was no structural damage, and the kitchen appliances and cabinetry were not damaged.
Two chief officers, four engines, a ladder truck, paramedic ambulance, drone and fire investigator responded, along with San Rafael police.
Building maintenance staff quickly cleaned the apartment and restored the sprinkler system to operation.
