SAN RAFAEL, CA — A new San Rafael program is expanding opportunities for autistic and neurodivergent adults to build job skills, pursue lifelong learning and develop greater independence after their school years.
The Helix Adult Academy officially opened Monday, building on the mission of The Helix School, a specialized independent school in San Rafael that serves autistic and neurodivergent students.
The academy's programming began Aug. 24.
The program aims to help bridge the gap between school-based services and adulthood, offering continued learning, workforce preparation, community engagement and independent living skills.
"The Helix Adult Academy grew from listening to our young people and families and recognizing that growth does not end when someone ages out of a school program," said Marjorie McMorris, the academy's founder and executive director, who also founded The Helix School.
The academy offers programming in six areas: lifelong learning, workforce readiness, entrepreneurship, community engagement, visual arts and media production, and independent living and life skills.
"Autistic and neurodivergent adults deserve opportunities to continue discovering their strengths, developing their independence, building community and pursuing lives that are meaningful to them," McMorris said.
With one staff member for every two participants and flexible attendance options, the program can serve up to 60 adults. Enrollment is open, and the academy plans to expand in the future.
"Families should be able to look beyond graduation and see possibility rather than a cliff," said Dr. Evangelia Ward-Jackson, interim executive director of The Helix School.
The academy celebrated its opening with a Sept. 22 ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce. The event included a proclamation from the city and a Certificate of Recognition from the California State Legislature.
Attendees included academy participants, families and supporters, along with local officials such as San Rafael Councilmember Eli Hill, Marin County Supervisor Mary Sackett and San Anselmo Vice Mayor Chantel Walker, who also chairs the academy's board.
"Adulthood should open doors, not close them," Walker said. "Autistic and neurodivergent adults deserve meaningful choices, genuine belonging and opportunities to continue growing throughout their lives."
The academy is located in San Rafael and is accepting enrollment inquiries.
