Anniversary Of SoCal Killing: Protesters Target San Ramon Gym

Albert Ramon Dorsey was shot and killed by an LAPD officer at a Hollywood 24 Hour Fitness one year ago.

SAN RAMON, CA — A small demonstration Tuesday morning at a 24 Hour Fitness in San Ramon was in protest of a Southern California officer-involved shooting that took place exactly one year ago.

San Ramon police did not provide details, but said the demonstration was small and without incident. The gathering came on the anniversary of the fatal officer-involved shooting at a Hollywood 24 Hour Fitness gym on Oct. 29, 2018.

Albert Ramon Dorsey, 30, who was believed to have been homeless, was shot dead around 9 a.m. after being pulled out of the gym's shower by Los Angeles Police Department officers. Police were called because Dorsey was allegedly trespassing.

Police body camera footage shows officers trying to get Dorsey out of the shower, but he repeatedly ignored their commands. At one point, officers appear to try to handcuff Dorsey, and when he resisted they deployed Tasers. The body camera footage from the officers fails to show the complete incident, for instance, when and how Dorsey was killed, as both cameras were knocked off while they tried to subdue him, according to a Patch report.

After the cameras were removed, according to an LAPD findings report from the incident, Dorsey assaulted one of the responding officers, prompting the other to shoot him.

Dorsey was pronounced dead at the scene.

Last month, the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners agreed that an LAPD officer violated the department's policy in the fatal shooting.

Since the fatal shooing, Black Lives Matter has called for a boycott of 24 Hour Fitness. An email to the organization was not immediately returned, so it's not clear who organized Tuesday's event in San Ramon.

An employee at the San Ramon 24 Hour Fitness site said he could not comment and was not allowed to give out any corporate phone numbers or email addresses.
