Assistance League of Diablo Valley's Operation School Bell Partners with Shell Martinez Refinery at K Mart

Assistance League® of Diablo Valley’s Operation School Bell® is a nationally acclaimed, hands-on philanthropic program that has served the local community since 1994. Last year alone, 4249 elementary school- children received new clothes and shoes that contribute to improved school attendance, campus citizenship and academic performance.

Since 2005, Shell Martinez Refinery employee volunteers, who had already lent emotional and educational support by reading to students in the Martinez School District’s classrooms, have participated in a Corporate Partners effort by joining Operation School Bell volunteers with clothing events typically held at the Community Resource Center in Walnut Creek. More recently, they have assumed the role of personal shoppers by helping Morello and John Muir Elementary School children in Martinez shop for clothes and shoes, this year, at Concord K Mart. Their synergy not only accommodated school schedules, it avoided district busing expenses.

Shell Martinez Refinery corporate partners’ impact on the community ranges from celebrating a heritage of “pioneers and pacesetters” to “building a better energy future.” When community minded organizations jointly help children succeed, everyone wins! As one nine-year old retail savvy shopper chimed while clutching to a pair of boots, “I’m wearing these to school tomorrow!”
