Baseball: Cal's Season Ends on Walk-Off Double
Michael Theofanopolous hit a two-run double to end Cal's hopes of an NCS title
North Coast Section Division I semifinal
Foothill 3, California 2
Records: Foothill 20-7, Cal 14-12-1
The Star: Cal's Chris Wingard allowed one run in 5 2/3 on the mound in his final high school appearance. He struck out two and walked one. However, Foothill's Will Anderson threw his second complete-game in five days to send Foothill to its first NCS championship game in school history. He scattered six hits, struck out five and got stronger as the game went along.
The Turning Point: Foothill senior Michael Theofanopolous hit a two-run double to the gap in left center to give Foothill the walk-off win.
The Quote: "I think everyone wants to win an NCS title," Cal coach Dan Ward said. "It's about getting hot at the right time and I think we did that, we just ran into a little bad luck at the end."
What's Next? Foothill plays rival Amador Valley on Saturday at Dougherty Valley, time TBA. Cal's season is over.
The Bottom Line: Cal finished the season strong with a four-game winning streak to reach the semifinals, but the magic ran out. It would have been Cal's first NCS title game appearance in baseball since 1996, when current Philadelphia Phillie Jimmy Rollins hit a walk-off homer to beat the Grizzlies at the Oakland Coliseum.
