Contra Costa County Man, 33, Killed at State Prison in Susanville

A Contra Costa County man was killed Monday at High Desert State Prison in Susanville in an attack by two other inmates, prison officials said today.

Matthew Jagger, 33, was serving a 13-year sentence for vehicle theft, carjacking and an in-prison assault on anther prisoner, officials said today. He was received by the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on Feb. 1, 2012.

Jagger was killed Monday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. when he was attacked by two other inmates in a maximum-security yard with a homemade weapon. Officers intervened using chemical weapons and provided medical aid at the scene, but Jagger died of his injuries after he was transferred to an outside medical facility, officials said. The inmates alleged to have been involved in the attack have been transferred to a segregation unit pending an investigation.

High Desert State Prison houses around 3,660 inmates including low, medium and maximum-security inmates, officials said.
