Destination Imagination
24 Local Teams Qualify for Global Finals for Destination Imagination
Destination Imagination is creative team problem solving for grades K through the university level. Teams create solutions for one of six challenges technical (Maze Craze), scientific (Unlikely Attraction), Fine Arts (Change of Tune), Improvisation (Treasure), Engineering (Drop Zone) and Community Service (Inside Impact). This is a hands-on way for kids to explore these STEAM subjects, tackling challenges and developing solutions together. Kids learn creative problem solving, team work, experimentation, time and budget management, in a context in which there is no pre-determined right answer or recipe for success. Congratulations to Destination Imagination California State Winners representing California for the Global Finals in Tennessee in May. Global Finals for Destination Imagination will culminate with the world's largest celebration of creativity. More than 15 countries will be represented, over 1200 teams, and over 8000 students. California will be sending about 64 teams, and 24 of those teams come from our greater Tri-Valley area. For more information about Destination Imagination - http://www.caldi.org/

Several teams got special awards:
MasterMinds - The Renaissance Award for Outstanding Design, Engineering or Performance This team built a fully functional cardboard boat with working propellers and steam engine. They had advanced circuitry to coordinate the working propeller, good ratios of design elements, advanced knowledge of basic chemistry to cause “Steam” from dry ice.
Clad in Iron - DaVinci Award for Outstanding Creativity This team used multiple techniques of construction to give full flying dragon wings and a cleverly engineered wishing well. The team used welding, plastics and aluminum molding with simple pneumatics to erect a professional set of dragon wings in an instant. The steampunk-ish design involved welding and firing bike chains into wood; hammered metal into heavy armored breast plates; and a battery-drill driven raising and lowering device for the “Fairy of Water and Fire” who could sit on a seat attached to pulleys for an impressive effect.
DIdea - DaVinci Award for Outstanding Creativity - Team brought a whole new idea to life about flying walruses, “walrus wopters” using clams and methane saving the world. Very innovative use of PVC, ideas to bring their story to life and thrust us to think about saving our earth.
Gigantic Teddybears - The Renaissance Award for Outstanding Design, Engineering or Performance - The presentation included hydraulic pops and stand-alone electronic circuitry that lit up the set and props. Several of their props had stand-alone custom electronic circuitry that would light up when activated or combined with other set pieces. They also had a sign that would pop up from their cache storage device using a hydraulic syringe system. An example of their electric circuitry was a prop of hydrogen (H2) that when combined with oxygen (O) lit up with blue light.
