22 CA Companies Among 100 Best To Work For In Nation: Fortune

CALIFORNIA — The business magazine Fortune, in partnership with analytics firm Great Place to Work, has released its annual list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in the United States.

Hilton took home the top spot on the list for the second year in a row, with Ultimate Software and Wegmans Food Markets rounding out the top three.

California had 22 of the best companies to work for in the nation, according to Fortune. Here the four top-ranking Golden State companies in Fortune's list:

#4: Cisco

• Industry: Information Technology
• Rank last year: 6
• Employees: 39,109
• Percentage of women: 28
• Percentage of minorities: 46
• Revenue in 2019: $51.9 billion

San Jose-based Cisco offers flexible paid time off for new parents and grandparents, free depression and anxiety screening, and meditation and yoga classes.

#5: Workday

• Industry: Information Technology
• Rank last year: 4
• Employees: 8,846
• Percentage of women: 42
• Percentage of minorities: 43
• Revenue in 2019: $2.8 billion

Pleasanton-based Workday staff work in a new six-story building with game rooms and indoor tree groves. It offers a program to attract veterans and nontraditional, diverse candidates.

#6: Salesforce

• Industry: Information Technology
• Rank last year: 2
• Employees: 26,244
• Percentage of women: 35
• Percentage of minorities: 36
• Revenue in 2019: $13 billion

San Francisco-based Salesforce has an office dedicated to ethical and humane technology use, and doles out $2,000 bonuses to employees who successfully recruit new candidates. Half of new hires were recruited by current employees.

#10: Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants

• Employees: 8,124
• Percentage of women: 47
• Percentage of minorities: 57
• Revenue in 2019: N/A

The San Francisco-based company launched several diversity hiring initiatives in 2019 to attract trans workers, moms and more.

To be considered for the list, companies submitted an application detailing over 200 data points describing their HR programs and practices. Great Place to Work, an analytics firm that has partnered with Fortune to create the list for the past 23 years, then conducted an anonymous survey of each company's workforce.

In total, 85 percent of the evaluation was based on what employees reported in the survey about “their experiences of trust and reaching their full human potential as part of their organization,” according to a methodology section for the rankings on Fortune’s website.

Companies need to employ at least 1,000 U.S. employees to be considered for the list, and government agencies aren’t eligible.
