On March 4, Governor Newsom declared a state of emergency for California associated with the coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak.

The state made this declaration for numerous reasons, but most importantly, to allow the state to expand their response capabilities to help control this situation.

The California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) put out an outstanding press release on March 4 that does a great job explaining the declaration. I would encourage you to read their press release, so you have a better understanding of the basis for this decision.

The coronavirus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, and despite what you might hear from other sources, the risk of infection in our region remains low. The seasonal flu remains a greater risk to you and your loved ones.

If you would like more information about the transmission of this virus, the Center for Disease Control has a very informative page here.

As mentioned in the messages we have distributed previously, by far, the best method to ensure your safety is through the use of non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs). The most critical aspect of these NPIs is related to personal hygiene. Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (sing Happy Birthday to yourself twice, and you will easily hit the 20-second mark), and resist the urge to touch your mouth, nose, and eyes throughout the day.

For more information on what you can do to protect yourself, visit Contra Costa County Health Services.

Also, this link will take you directly to a list of approved cleaning products for use against the coronavirus. This list was created by the American Chemistry Council’s Center for Biocide Chemistries and approved for distribution by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

As always, please do your best to ensure the information you gather regarding this situation is gained from trusted sources. We will continue to do our best to keep you informed on any changes, updates, or vital information as they become available.
