Indoor Sports Facility Requests to Expand, Extend Weekend Hours, Sell Alcohol
San Ramon Sports opened its doors in 1996. Its owners have plans to improve the facilities by adding a new office, snack bar and other amenities.
An indoor sports complex may start selling beer and wine after adult soccer games and extend weekend hours to 1 in the morning.
San Ramon Sports, 2411 Old Crow Canyon Road, offers year-round indoor soccer fields, batting cages and an entertainment center.
Owner John Penna asked the city for permission to expand its facility from 27,300 to 30,800 square feet, reduce parking space requirement for its zoning designation, extend its weekend hours and sell alcohol.

Planning Commissioners will consider the request at a Feb. 15 meeting.
"We have adult soccer that plays here and we've requested to sell beer and wine after the games," Penna said. "We have no intention of any nightclub or nightlife ... just to serve existing customers."

Local churches and other groups often rent out the facility for parties to use their entertainment center and batting cages, he said. Many families rent it out for children's birthday parties.
San Ramon Sports opened its doors 17 years ago, Penna said. His plan to expansion includes elongating one of the two soccer arenas, installing a new snack bar, building a new main entrance, waiting room and main office.
Though the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control authorizes alcohol sales, cities can place restrictions on those permits. City staff recommends the following stipulations: No alcohol sales after 11 p.m., only two drinks per transaction and all adult beverages should be served in plastic cups easily distinguished from the others.
The Planning Commission meeting takes place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the City Council Chambers, 2222 Camino Ramon.
