Little League All Stars: San Ramon 10s comeback for Section 3 Title

San Ramon will head to Chico to play for Nor Cal title this weekend.

The Star: Sam York did a little bit of everything for San Ramon. York went 3 for 4 with a pair of singles and a double. He scored twice and drove in two to lead San Ramon to victory.

The Turning Point: You'd be hard pressed to find a more clutch little league hit. Nick McCambridge's one-out, two-run triple in the sixth to give San Ramon the eventual winning run was, as coach Jeff Santos said, "as clutch as they come." McCambridge later scored on a Ryan Cole RBI single, but it was his triple which carried San Ramon to the title.

The Quote: "This game was all heart and never giving up," coach Jeff Santos said. "This was all in all, an incredible game."

They don't get much more exciting than this.

The San Ramon Little League 10-year-old All Stars needed a sixth-inning comeback to top Salida Little League en route to the Section 3 10-year-old championship.

After falling behind 9-8 going into the sixth, San Ramon needed a rally. Lucky for San Ramon, it had the heart of the lineup coming up. Sam York started it with a single up the middle. Jack Powers epitomized the meaning of "taking one for the team" by taking a pitch in the shoulder to reach base. A couple wild pitches advanced the runners before McCambridge launched a ball to the fence to plate the eventual winning runs.

"We've had comebacks all year," coach Jeff Santos said. "These boys are well trained and have great discipline in tight situations. They all have heart."

McCambridge's triple woke up a quiet San Ramon fan base that was quieted an inning earlier when Salida scored six runs with two outs to take a 9-8 lead. Salida's rally was capped off by a Matt Dallas grand slam. All the negative thoughts stemming from Salida's rally were quickly vanquished, however, by San Ramon's come-from-behind victory.

The game started off right for San Ramon as it scored four times in the top of the first. Salida, however, countered with three runs in the bottom of the first.

San Ramon added three in the fourth and one in the fifth before scoring the most important three runs of its season in the sixth.

Santos said this win was a complete team effort and everyone contributed to the victory.

"It's been a goal of this team to go this far and win a section title from the very beginning," Santos said.

San Ramon's victory came on the same day fellow District 57 members San Ramon and Danville won the 12s and 11s Section 3 title, respectively. Santos believes District 57's dominance is due to the athletes that live in the area.

"San Ramon Little League has definitely taken the driver's seat in this district," he said. "All the training this league goes through is finally paying off. It's not how strong you are but how athletic and how hard you work to improve."

San Ramon will take its talents to Chico this weekend to compete for the Northern California  championship.

To say Santos is confident about San Ramon's chances this weekend might be an understatement. He's almost expecting positive results.

"As long as we hit, pitch and play defense well, we can beat anyone," he said. "We're going up to Chico to win the whole thing."
