New San Ramon Public Art Installation 'Legacy' Dedicated in Memory of Byron Athan
Artist Madeline Wiener created the piece.
SAN RAMON, CA — On Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 5:30 the City of San Ramon will dedicate “Legacy” the newest public art piece at Athan Downs located at the intersection of Montevideo Dr. and Davona Dr. in San Ramon. The piece was commissioned by the City of San Ramon. The Arts Advisory Committee and the Parks and Community Services Commission selected artist Madeline Wiener to create a public art piece that honored longtime City Attorney, former Councilmember and Mayor Byron Athan.
Mr. Athan was a resident of San Ramon from 1964 until his passing in 2009. He served on many civic boards and played a key role in securing the first park bond for San Ramon which allowed for the first two (2) public parks, senior center and the San Ramon Olympic Pool to be built. Athan Downs was named in his honor by the Dublin-San Ramon Services District in 1976 for his work in securing the park bond.
The public art piece “Legacy” by sculptor Madeline Wiener is located adjacent to the tennis courts, a place near and dear to Mr. Athan’s heart, and serves as a tribute to his lifetime of service to his family, his community and his country. The dedication ceremony will include comments from the artist about the sculpture and a poem written by Poet Laureate Kathy Moore. The community is encouraged to attend.
