SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon resident Sundar Gopalan swam 3000 yards to raise funds and awareness for Narika, a Fremont nonprofit serving survivors of domestic violence. On Oct. 8, he swam 122 laps in the Cal High pool in under an hour.

Thanks to community and corporate donations, he has raised over $6,000.

Since 1992, Narika has supported survivors of intimate partner violence, particularly in the South Asian community. It offers free counseling, safety planning, support groups, and job and wellness programs for survivors of domestic violence.

Narika said that it has witnessed a threefold increase in domestic violence cases over the course of the pandemic.

Gopalan is aiming to raise a dollar for Narika for every yard he swims. He said that he hopes this will be an annual event so that he can help “inspire more men, boys and youth overall to join the movement to prevent cycles of violence in our community.”
