San Ramon Safeway Shoppers Can Help Feed Hungry Local Families
The Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley is working with local Safeway stores and NBC Bay Area to facilitate donations to the food bank.
SAN RAMON VALLEY, CA — Want to help local families in need? Shop at Danville's Safeway store and donate $10 at checkout to bolster food bank supplies.
The Kiwanis Club of San Ramon Valley, NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48 are teaming up with Safeway stores for a 16th annual food drive.
Kiwanis Club members usually stand outside of the store and collect donations, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, shoppers will have the option of donating $10 to the Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano at checkout, said Nicholas Gant of the Kiwanis. Each cash register will be equipped with scannable tickets that can be removed from a tear pad by shoppers who wish to donate.

This year's fundraiser theme is Nourishing Neighbors, "reminding everyone that we’re all in this together, and that you never know who might need a little extra help this holiday season," Gant wrote.
Donations to the food bank will be distributed based on need, he said.

The fundraiser will last through Dec. 29, according to NBC Bay Area.
“Because of the COVID-19 pandemic and need for social distancing our local food banks are facing a shortage of volunteers as the need for food assistance has surged," said Stacy Owen, president and general manager of NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48, in an article. "Our goal is to give people an easy way to help while they are out buying groceries for their families.”
More than 161 Safeway stores in the Bay Area are part of the effort, including those in San Ramon Valley.
Visit the Safeway in San Ramon at 11050 Bollinger Canyon Road or 2505 San Ramon Valley Blvd. to participate.

Patch has partnered with Feeding America to help raise awareness on behalf of the millions of Americans facing hunger. Feeding America, which supports 200 food banks across the country, estimates that in 2020, more than 50 million Americans will not have enough nutritious food to eat due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. This is a Patch social good project; Feeding America receives 100 percent of donations. Find out how you can donate in your community or find a food pantry near you.
