San Ramon Vice Mayor Sabina Zafar Announces Run For Mayor
The first Asian-American elected to the San Ramon City Council says she wants to embrace change while preserving quality of life.

SAN RAMON, CA — San Ramon Councilmember Sabina Zafar launched her candidacy for mayor at Firehouse 39 restaurant last week.
In November 2018, Zafar was the first Asian-American elected to the City Council in a city where 47.6 percent of residents are Asian, according to the 2020 census. She was unanimously elected by the mayor and council as vice mayor in 2020.
Zafar lists citizen engagement, embracing change, preserving open space, and more as some of her top priorities.

“Open and inclusive governance is the cornerstone of my public service,” said Zafar. “Since joining the city council, more residents are engaged in the decisions we make, strengthening the fabric of our community,” she said in a statement. “As Mayor, I want to build on this community engagement, do city business in new ways and continue to provide the level of service you expect.
“San Ramon is changing rapidly, becoming a diverse city and a magnet for technology and innovation. Instead of being wary of change, I celebrate our diversity and embrace the exciting new changes happening, like our new City Center. At the same time, I’ve
worked to preserve all that makes San Ramon a destination city, including open space and
parks, good schools, public safety, and a high quality of life.”

Zafar is a technology executive at Oracle who has served on a number of local boards and committees. Before joining the council, she served on the City of San Ramon Transportation Advisory Committee, the Board for San Ramon American Association of University Women, and the Board of Bishop Ranch Intelligence Innovation Accelerator as a mentor for early-stage startups. She also serves on the Asian Pacific Island American Public Affairs Association and the San Ramon Dougherty Valley Rotary Club.
