SRVUSD Board of Education Approves Rate Increase for Substitute Teachers

School districts throughout California, including SRVUSD, are experiencing significant shortages of substitutes.

Announcement submitted by San Ramon Valley Unified School District:

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s (SRVUSD) Board of Education approved rate increases for substitute teachers as part of the District’s efforts to address an ongoing substitute shortage at their Board Meeting Tuesday night. The action includes creating a higher rate for retired SRVUSD teachers who are experienced and already have knowledge of the District’s practices.

The Board of Education approved the following substitute teacher rates:

  • Daily Rate (1-20 consecutive days): $130
  • Long Term Daily Rate (21-60 consecutive days): $150
  • Long Term Daily Rate (61+ consecutive days): $170
  • Retired Teacher Daily Rate: $160

SRVUSD staff conducted a comparison study of teacher substitute rates in 35 surrounding districts. The study demonstrated that prior to the Board’s action Tuesday, SRVUSD’s rates were among the lowest in the area.

School districts throughout California, including SRVUSD, are experiencing significant shortages of substitutes. This is due in large part to an improved economy and job market, which has reduced the number of people drawn to education for part-time employment.

To apply, substitute teachers must provide:

1. Bachelor’s Degree

2. Proof of passage of the CBEST Examination (preferred but not required)

3. Letter of Introduction

4. Resume

SRVUSD is also in need of substitute paraeducators, who support teachers by providing support to students with special needs. They are paid $13.73 per hour. The proficiency requirement includes completion of ONE of the following:

  1. 48 semester units from an accredited college/university
  2. Associate of Arts/Science degree
  3. Pass the District’s “No Child Left Behind” paraeducator test
  4. Pass the CBEST test
