Suspect Cuffed For Online Car Sale That Turned Violent In Contra Costa Co.: Police

EAST BAY, CA – A man was arrested in Fremont last week after investigators connected him to an alleged armed robbery and assault that occurred when a Contra Costa County resident was attempting to show his vehicle for sale to prospective "buyers," according to police.

The Lafayette victim reportedly was forced to the ground, struck in the head with a gun and robbed of his watch, phone and a necklace June 30 inside his home's garage on the 3400 block of Moraga Boulevard while meeting two individuals who answered his online advertisement of his vehicle for sale.

The Lafayette Police Department reviewed nearby residents' surveillance videos and identified the suspects' car, as it was photographed heading toward Highway 24, as a 2014 VW Jetta with a unique sticker on the passenger-side front windshield. Investigators then associated individuals with a Fremont address and found two subjects who matched the robbery suspects' descriptions, police said

One was linked to the crime, the agency said, and an arrest warrant was issued for that person, plus search warrants for an apartment in Fremont and the suspect vehicle, also in Fremont.

On Thursday evening, Fremont police arrested the suspect, and the vehicle was towed to Lafayette. The Fremont SWAT team served the search warrant on the suspect's apartment and recovered the wristwatch purportedly taken from the victim during the robbery.

The suspect was booked at the Martinez Detention Facility, and Lafayette police are seeking to identify, locate and arrest the second suspect, the department said.
