Using standards of excellence evidenced by student achievement measures, the Department honors high-performing schools and schools that are making great strides in closing any achievement gaps among student groups. Green Valley Elementary won in the category of Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools and Hidden Hills Elementary won in the category of Exemplary High Performing Schools.
Schools that receive the National Blue Ribbon distinction share some core elements of effective schools. Their leaders not only articulate a vision of excellence and hold everyone to high standards, they stay close to the real action of teaching and learning. Mutual respect and trust run deep in their cultures. Faculty are supported by mentoring and professional development and have time to coordinate their work. “We are honored that our schools have been recognized by the Department of Education as 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools,” SRVUSD Superintendent Dr. John Malloy said. “These schools continually strive to increase achievement and improve outcomes for every student.”
The coveted National Blue Ribbon Schools award affirms the hard work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Now in its 38th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed almost 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools, with some schools winning multiple awards. Schools are eligible for nomination after five years.
National Blue Ribbon Schools are honored at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC, where each receives a plaque and flag to signify its exemplary status. These schools serve as examples for other schools throughout the nation and details of their achievements are shared on the U.S. Department of Education’s website.
