Meet Santa Barbara Unified's New Student Board Member, Victoria Martinez Peñaranda (independent.com) — Santa Barbara Unified has appointed Alta Vista Middle College student Victoria Martinez Peñaranda as the new student board member, giving local students a fresh voice in district decisions. She plans to champion mental health resources, early intervention programs, and better awareness of academic and personal support services for Santa Barbara students, drawing on her leadership and advocacy experience.
   

2. Santa Barbara Zoo unveils a whole new "Boo at the Zoo" for Halloween - Santa Barbara News-Press (newspress.com) — Santa Barbara families can look forward to an expanded Boo at the Zoo, with daytime Halloween activities from October 16–31 and three evenings of after-dark fun October 23–25. The Santa Barbara Zoo is also adding a new 21+ Adult Night on October 22, offering costumes, music, animal encounters, and member discounts on special-event tickets.
   

3. Man Arrested After String of Burglaries at Student Housing Complex in Santa Barbara (noozhawk.com) — A 19-year-old Santa Barbara resident was arrested after a series of burglaries and vehicle thefts at the Beach City student housing complex on the Mesa, where 14 unlocked apartments were hit and two cars stolen. Police recovered stolen property and the vehicles, and are asking Santa Barbara residents with additional information to contact Detective Saul Amezquita.
   

4. Mentors and Tutors Sought in Presentation by the Police Activities League to Santa Barbara Young Professionals (keyt.com) — Santa Barbara's Police Activities League just recruited new mentors and tutors after presenting to the Santa Barbara Young Professionals, and they're still looking for more community help. The nonprofit, based downtown at Chapala and Victoria, supports local youth with homework, field trips, and holiday events funded by donations. Residents can get involved through PAL or the Young Professionals Club.
   

5. From Sidewalk to Sea: Santa Barbara Superheroes Take on Ocean Pollution (independent.com) — Santa Barbara County residents are invited to join Coastal Cleanup Day on Saturday, September 19, with 37 cleanup sites from Alameda Park and Oak Park to local beaches like Leadbetter, Butterfly, and Goleta. Volunteers will collect trash, log what they find, and help protect nearby creeks and the Pacific. Registration is free and open now online.
