1. 100 Years of The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden (independent.com) — Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is celebrating its 100th anniversary in October with free admission every Sunday, themed weekly activities, and a monthlong Garden to Glass cocktail fundraiser at 11 local bars and restaurants. Families, dog owners, and cocktail fans can all find something, from sunset yoga and kids' storytimes to pooch parades and botanically inspired drinks that support native plant conservation.
2. Businesses Rally in September with Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation (keyt.com) — Santa Barbara businesses are teaming up this month to raise money for Teddy Bear Cancer Foundation, supporting a new pediatric cancer support center and family services. Grassini winery and Mendocino Farms in La Cumbre Plaza are among those donating portions of sales, giving locals several easy ways to help families facing childhood cancer right now.
3. Islamic Society of Santa Barbara Mosque Opening Delays (lifetechnology.com) — After nearly two decades of effort, the Islamic Society of Santa Barbara's new mosque has faced major delays, largely from a decade-long city permitting process and 16 public hearings in Goleta. Parking and neighborhood concerns slowed the project, but the congregation remains committed as members continue waiting for a permanent worship and gathering space to finally open.
4. Maria Ygnacio Bike Path in Goleta closes for storm repairs (ksby.com) — Cyclists in Santa Barbara County who use the Maria Ygnacio Bike Path near Goleta should plan for detours through at least mid-November while storm damage is permanently repaired. The county is investing Measure A funds to stabilize the U.S. 101 undercrossing section and urges drivers along Calle Real, Patterson, Hollister, and nearby routes to watch for increased bike traffic during the closure.
5. Driver Killed in Wrong-Way Crash with Chumash Bus Identified as Church Vandal (noozhawk.com) — Authorities have confirmed that the driver killed in a June wrong-way crash near Los Alamos was the same man who vandalized Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Santa Barbara. The church still awaits full restoration of its damaged mosaic, with repair costs estimated around $30,000 and restitution issues unresolved after the driver's death.
