2 Santa Cruz Deputies Injured After Chasing Suspect

Deputies responded to the area of Maywood Drive in Boulder Creek at 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a trespasser in a car.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA -- A man crashed his car several times and damaged patrol vehicles before leading Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputies on a short foot chase and being arrested this morning, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies responded to the area of Maywood Drive in Boulder Creek at 8:30 a.m. after receiving a report of a trespasser in a car. The suspect saw deputies and allegedly reversed and collided with another car, which
forced a parked car into a deputy's vehicle.

He then drove toward two deputies and crashed into another car before reversing the car toward two deputies, going down a driveway and crashing into a fence.

He then continued down the road into a culvert and crashed into a tree, according to deputies. The suspect, whose name was not yet released, got out of the car, ran into the woods and was arrested after a short chase.

Two deputies were injured while chasing after him, but Sgt. Brian Cleveland said the injuries were likely due to falling down and not because of an assault by the suspect. The deputies were taken to a hospital but their
injuries are not life-threatening.

Sheriff's officials said the suspect was combative after his arrest and tried to kick the windows out of a patrol car.

An investigation found that the suspect's vehicle had been stolen from a car dealership in San Jose. He will be identified and booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a stolen vehicle and resisting arrest.
