250 Pounds Of Illegal Fireworks Seized By Santa Cruz Co. Deputies

The seizure was part of an overall 4th of July Activity Report released Friday by the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — During a 24-hour period that began at 6 a.m. July 4, Santa Cruz County deputies responded to 187 calls for service, 63 of which involved fireworks, the sheriff's office reported Friday. Although fireworks are illegal through nearly all of Santa Cruz County—the city of Watsonville allows the "Safe and Sane" variety—it didn't stop some from breaking the law.

According to the sheriff's office, 250 pounds of illegal fireworks were confiscated, and over the 24-hour period deputies wrote 16 citations involving fireworks, drug and/or alcohol violations. Over the same period, 10 people were arrested for alcohol, drug, and/or assault charges.

In total, there were 35 bookings at the Santa Cruz County Jail and an additional 13 diversions to the Janus Sobering Center, according to the sheriff's office.
