MONTEREY COUNTY, CA — Three people were killed Saturday night when a driver who was accused of being intoxicated allegedly caused a collision on state Highway 1 in Monterey County.
The fatal wreck occurred at about 10:15 p.m. when a GMC pickup truck that was driven by 51-year-old David Olaeta allegedly went into the opposing lanes, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol.
Olaeta was going southbound when he allegedly drifted into the northbound lanes just north of Springfield Road. He allegedly sideswiped a Ford pickup truck before slamming head-on into a Honda Sedan occupied by three men.
One person in the Ford was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, CHP said.
All three occupants of the Honda were also taken to a hospital, where all three died from their injuries.
Olaeta allegedly showed signs of intoxication from alcohol after the crash, according to CHP. He was booked into Monterey County Jail on multiple accusations, including vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
