Prescribed Burn Planned at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park (slvpost.com) — A prescribed burn is scheduled as early as May 18 in the Sandhills area of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, run by the State Parks’ Santa Cruz District. Expect smoke, a Pine Trail closure, and shifting dates based on weather. Residents with health sensitivities should limit outdoor exertion and can call the district hotline for updates.
2. Santa Cruz County Office of Education announces Educator of the Year Awards (santacruzsentinel.com) — Santa Cruz County’s top educators and community partners are being honored this week, including a counselor serving Costanoa Career Prep High and Ark Independent Studies in Santa Cruz and Cabrillo College as Community Partner of the Year. The piece also highlights a new interim executive director for the Santa Cruz Film Festival and celebrates four Santa Cruz natives who just achieved their Eagle rank in Scouting.
3. Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office use of license plate readers unpacked at upcoming supervisors meeting (santacruzsentinel.com) — Santa Cruz County supervisors meet Tuesday in Santa Cruz to review sheriff’s use of license plate reader data, immigrant protections, and a six-year strategic plan shaping housing, transit, safety, and climate resilience. They’ll also consider new North Coast transit ideas, including a Santa Cruz-to-Cotoni-Coast Dairies excursion rail and a Davenport path, with public access via Ocean Street and Zoom.
4. 4 reportedly trapped by high tide at beach in Santa Cruz County (ksbw.com) — Four people were reportedly trapped by rising high tide at Yellowbank Beach, just south of Panther Beach in Santa Cruz County, prompting a multi-agency rescue response. State Parks, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, CAL FIRE and the U.S. Coast Guard were working to determine the safest way to get them out, with few details available so far.
5. California receives last of pre-war oil as Hormuz closure fuels gas price fears (ksbw.com) — Santa Cruz County drivers are now paying about $6.26 per gallon as the war-driven closure of the Strait of Hormuz squeezes oil supplies to California. The Port of Long Beach has received its last pre-war shipment, and experts are unsure when new deliveries will arrive, pushing statewide averages even higher than the national price.
