The crash was reported around 12:48 p.m. The man was driving a black 2017 Honda Pilot southbound when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle drifted off the west edge of the roadway north of Scott Creek, struck a call box, traveled through vegetation in a southwesterly direction and went over the cliff.
Despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. He is believed to have been the sole occupant of the vehicle.
Whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash has not been determined.
Anyone with information is asked to call CHP dispatch at (831) 796-2160.
