Murray Street Bridge to close for summer (santacruzlocal.org) — Murray Street Bridge in Santa Cruz will fully close to all cars, bikes, and pedestrians from roughly mid-June through September for safety repairs, with completion of the overall project expected in January 2028. Drivers, cyclists, and walkers will need to use marked detours via Seabright, Soquel, 7th Avenue, Arana Gulch, and routes around the north harbor.
2. Meet DeLaveaga Elementary's It Takes a Village initiative: Envisioning phone-free schools, childhood (santacruzsentinel.com) — Parents at DeLaveaga Elementary in Santa Cruz are organizing the “It Takes a Village” effort to delay kids’ smartphone use and promote screen-free childhoods. Working alongside existing Santa Cruz City Schools phone rules, they’re growing pledges, hosting film screenings, and planning districtwide events to help families manage kids’ tech use at home and school.
3. Enthusiasm builds for FIFA World Cup events happening in Santa Cruz County (santacruzsentinel.com) — Santa Cruz County is gearing up to turn the 2026 FIFA World Cup into a month-long local celebration, with beach watch parties, skills clinics, quirky tournaments and public art centered in Santa Cruz and nearby cities. From Boardwalk events on Main Beach to Watsonville and Scotts Valley tournaments, officials hope to showcase local soccer culture, boost tourism and give residents plenty of free and family-friendly ways to join the global excitement.
4. Firefighters contain backyard shed fire in Pleasure Point (mercedsunstar.com) — Firefighters from the Central Fire District of Santa Cruz County quickly contained a backyard shed fire off Portola Drive in Pleasure Point, preventing it from spreading into nearby homes. Santa Cruz Fire and other agencies were briefly called before extra resources were canceled, and no injuries were reported. One dog went missing during the chaos but was safely reunited with its owner.
5. Mild week ahead as the marine layer returns (ksbw.com) — Expect a mild week around Santa Cruz as the marine layer deepens, bringing cool, cloudy mornings along the coast from Santa Cruz to Aptos and warmer inland valleys. Forecasters also warn of increased sneaker waves and rip currents through Tuesday morning, followed by slightly cooler temperatures later in the week.
