Bat Tests Positive For Rabies In Monterey County
The bat was found in the City of Seaside on July 27 and tested positive for rabies, the Monterey County Health Department announced.
SEASIDE, CA — A bat that was found in July in the City of Seaside tested positive for rabies, the Monterey County Health Department reported Friday.
The bat was found in the eastern area of La Salle Avenue, authorities said.
While no people are known to have been in contact with the bat, one pet was contacted and is being quarantined, according to a news release from the health department.

"The Monterey County Health Department and Animal Services want to remind the public that there is a continuous presence of rabies in local wildlife, both in and out of city limits," A Monterey County Health Department news release said. "In Monterey County, commonly seen skunks and bats are the most common species to test positive for the virus."
Rabies can be prevented by getting pets vaccinated, staying away from wildlife, and seeking medical care immediately after potential exposure.

Rabies vaccinations for pets are available at the SPCA for Monterey County, Petsmart in Salinas, Banfield Pet Hospital in the Sand City Petsmart, VIP Petcare, and Protect Your Pet, according to the health department.
