Bike Theft Prevention: Santa Cruz PD Offers Tips

Bicycle owners can register their bikes online with the police department.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — With Santa Cruz's lovely year-round weather and exceptional vistas, it's no wonder that so many rely on their bikes to get them places. The city announced last year that it held the second-highest bicycle commuting rate in America, in 2017, at 13 percent.

Unlucky cyclists who fall victim to bicycle theft often don't report the crime, the Santa Cruz Police Department said. It's important to file a report immediately, police say.

Bike frames and wheels should always be locked to a stationary object, even if the bike is in your garage or on a second-floor balcony. Don't just rely on a cable lock, police say.
