Sneaker Waves, Deadly Beach Hazards Possible: Santa Cruz County
California's coastline from Sonoma to Big Sur is under a beach hazard warning for potentially life-threatening conditions.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Much of the Golden State coastline is under a beach hazards warning from 5 a.m. Wednesday to 9 a.m. Thursday, with National Weather Service officials predicting breaking waves up to 22 feet high and swells up to 12 feet high at times. Life-threatening conditions such as sneaker waves, rip currents and large shore break will be possible, officials say.
Sneaker waves — or waves that are more likely to sweep away unsuspecting beachgoers — were most likely to hit late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon, NWS wrote. Steep beaches are at higher risk of sneaker waves and could see greater wave run-up.
Large waves are expected to wash over jetties and otherwise-dry rock outcroppings, NWS said.
