Citizen Science: Sea Star Wasting Syndrome

What is happening to our sea stars? What can they tell us about our ocean’s health? Join graduate researcher Kirsten DeNesnera for this exploratory family event. Part of the monthly series of Citizen Science events happening every third Thursday at the Downtown Branch. Sponsored by the Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery.

Kristin de Nesnera is a PhD student at University of California Santa Cruz Long Marine Laboratory. She studies mussel bed communities along the rocky shores of central California.

Using field surveys and experiments she is gaining a better understanding of the importance of interactions between mussels and other rocky intertidal species.

She plans to synthesize this understanding to better inform conservation and restoration efforts in this ecologically, economically, and recreationally valuable ecosystem.
