Coast Guard Suspends Search For 2 Missing Surfers Near Santa Cruz Lighthouse

Authorities haven't been able to confirm the report of 2 surfers in distress.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended a search Saturday morning for two missing surfers near the Santa Cruz Lighthouse, pending further developments.

Two surfers were reported yelling for help about 200 yards offshore on Friday evening. But the Coast Guard says it hasn't been able to confirm the incident as of Saturday afternoon.

The Coast Guard and partner agencies searched more than 90 miles for 10.5 combined hours before suspending the search around 8 a.m.

No reports of missing surfers received have been received by local authorities or through social-media outreach, the Coast Guard says.

"The decision to suspend a search weighs heavily on all crews involved," said Michael Zapawa, a search-and-rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. "That decision is based on careful evaluation of all available information, including extensive search efforts, environmental conditions, and survivability assessments."
