Screening of Compelling 'Documented' Film Set in Aptos

The film “Documented,” by Pulitzer Prize winner Jose Antonio Vargas, will be screened at Temple Beth El, 3055 Porter Gulch Road, Aptos, on Saturday, May 17.

“Documented” is Vargas’ story of how he was able to fulfill his dream of American higher education as an undocumented immigrant. 

A reception will be held prior to the film’s showing, at 5:30 p.m. with four academically talented, undocumented individuals from University of California at Santa Cruz  telling their story. 

Screening of the film will be at 7 p.m. and reception and film are open to the general public. (See film's Facebook page here.)

The reception will honor donors to the UCSC Dreamweavers initiative and held in memory of Dan Rothman, a widely respected UCSC writing instructor and mentor to undocumented students.

“Dreamweavers,” a non-profit organization established in 2011 by former UCSC Director of Financial Aid Esperanza Nee and Mary Male, Professor emerita at San Jose State University, will sponsor the film and co sponsors are the Communities Organized for Relational Power (COPA) and the Social Action Committee of Temple Beth El.

According to Male: “Dreamweavers offers a welcoming friendly and helpful community of support at UCSC for Dream Act students that includes 215 undocumented students with 400 expected for the fall semester. It further assures that they have an excellent University experience and a path toward their life and career expectations.”

George Blumenthal, Chancellor of UCSC, will be introducing the students at the reception who will tell their compelling stories. 

The event will be no charge and open to the general public, however, scholarship donations will be gratefully accepted in advance or at the door.
