FREE TIMEBANK MIXER AT FREDERICK STREET PARK

Everyone is invited to a free TimeBank mixer on Saturday, August 18 from 2:00 to 5:00 pm in Frederick Street Park at 168 Fredrick Street between Glenview Street and Woods Lagoon in the Seabright neighborhood. Members and prospective members are encouraged to bring a potluck item to share.

TimeBank is a system of reciprocal service exchange that uses units of time as currency. Members provide services to earn TimeCredits and spend those TimeCredits to receive services. Monthly mixers provide new and prospective members an opportunity to meet other members, socialize and learn about the best methods for getting the most out of their TimeBank membership.

"The mixers are usually held in private homes," says TimeBank Director Bonnie Linden. "The park is a more public forum that we hope will attract those who have been curious about the TimeBank but were a little shy about coming to a stranger's house. The park also provides an opportunity to expand the social aspect of timebanking. In addition to membership information, the picnic includes a puppet show, games and opportunities for play."

Membership in TimeBank Santa Cruz has grown rapidly since this open-source sustainable economy program was established in January, 2012. The TimeBank website at http://www.santacruz.timebanks.org provides a convenient way for members to post and review service requests and offers and to keep track of exchanges. Additionally, TimeBank Santa Cruz offers local non-profits an excellent resource for building volunteer bases by rewarding volunteers with TimeCredits.

"TimeBank has worked out beautifully for me," said member Jayme Kelly Curtis. "So far I've gotten help with yardwork and computer maintenance; I've had clothing altered and received therapeutic massages, all without any money changing hands except for the $25 annual dues. It's a great system because you can use the services of any member in the network. It's not straight-across trade between two members. You use the TimeCredits you earn as currency to 'purchase' the services you want."

TimeBank Santa Cruz is a project of the Reskilling Expo, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization fiscally sponsored by the Hub for Sustainable Living. More information is available at http://www.reskillingexpo.org/ and at http://www.santacruz.timebanks.org.
