SANTA CRUZ, CA — KSBW reported the City of Santa Cruz has lowered its flags at half-mast this week in honor of three men who have recently died: the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's sergeant fatally shot this weekend, a Branciforte Fire Protection District Captain who died unexpectedly and George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Flags at the California State Capitol were also flown at half-mast in honor of Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, who was ambushed with a volley of gunfire and explosives while responding to a call in Ben Lomond Saturday afternoon.

Gov. Gavin Newsom said Gutzwiller "will be remembered as a hero who devoted his life to protecting the community and as a loving husband and father.”
