Why Go: Baroque flute. Nice. Faculty member Greer Ellison is the artist performing for "Baroque Flute on Tour," featuring music from baroque composers of different countries and contrasting styles. Music by J.S. Bach, Corelli, Couperin, Leclair and more. She is joined by JungHae Kim, harpsichord, and Kevin Cooper, guitar.

2. Fallen Officer Foundation 6th Annual BallWhere/When: 400 Beach St., Santa Cruz (Cocoanut Grove), Saturday, 5:30-11 p.m.

Why Go: The foundation exists to provide support to first responders in their time of need. Satturday's event is a fundraiser for that purpose. You will have a good time—dinner, dancing, silent and live auction. You'll also be helping.

3. AN EVENING WITH DR. MAYA ANGELOU
Where/When: , 307 Church St., Saturday, 8 p.m.
Why Go: Maya Angelou is a remarkable Renaissance woman who is hailed as one of the great voices of contemporary literature. An opportunity to hear her speak and read from her work is an opportunity not to be missed.

4. ROMANCE IN THE REDWOODS
Where/When: Big Basin Redwoods State Park, 1600 Big Basin Way, Boulder Creek, Sunday, 11 a.m.
Why go: Just in time for Valentine's Day, join the Santa Cruz State Park Department for Romance in the Redwoods. Come out to Big Basin Redwoods State Park for an easy one-hour walk where you'll learn about courtship, mating and reproduction behaviors of banana slugs, newts and woodpeckers!

5. BEATLES MUSIC FOR THE VALENTINE'S DAY WEEKEND
Where/When: Kuumbwa Jazz Center. 320 Cedar St., Friday and Saturday. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Why Go: Because it's the Beatles music. Is there anyone who doesn't like the Beatles or doesn't have a memory linked to some Beatles song? This is a weekend of BEATLES music performed on mostly acoustic instruments—selections included from the last 7 albums- Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper's, Magical Mystery Tour, The “White” Album, Let it Be and Abbey Road, with an accent on beautiful melodies, acoustic guitars, grand piano and rich, vocal sounds.
