Your weekend guide to what's happening in Santa Cruz.

t's going to be a wintery little icebox of a weekend, but there are plenty of ways to stay warm. By leaving the house, that is.

LARA PRICE AND SANTA CRUZ SIRENS BURLESQUE

WHAT: Bay Area blues singer Lara Price Blues Band plays two sets, sandwiching a sensuously real performance by Santa Cruz Sirens Burlesque.

JAIMAL YOGIS: THE FEAR PROJECT

WHAT: Outdoorsman, award winning writer, and author of The Saltwater Buddha will talk about his latest book, The Fear Project, a story which follows his quest to navigate his own fears, "From monsters under his bed, to surfing Mavericks."
WHERE: Bookshop Santa Cruz in downtown Santa Cruz.
WHEN: Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7:00.
PRICE: Free, but you should buy the book and get it signed!

SANTA CRUZ FUNGUS FAIR

 "When it rains, it spores." 

WHAT: The 39th Annual Santa Cruz Fungus fair showcases over 200 different species. There will be dozens of fungus experts on hand giving a range of demonstrations and features, as well as identification experts.
WHERE: Louden Nelson Community Center in Santa Cruz
WHEN: Friday, Jan. 11 from 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., Sat, Jan. 12 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday, Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
PRICE: $5 on Friday, and $10 on Saturday and Sunday.

WOOSTER!

WHAT: Santa Cruz-based quintet Wooster is a well-loved band playing a blend of highly-danceable soul/rock and reggae. Wooster celebrates their latest album If All the Dew Were Diamonds, with opening band Arden Park Roots ft. Vendredi.
WHERE: Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz

Follow Me Down: Portraits of Louisiana Prison Musicians

WHAT: a Film Screening to benefit the William James Association Prison Arts Project. Follow me Down is a feature length documentary shot over two years in three different Louisiana prisons. Discussion with filmmaker and former prison musician follows screening.
WHERE: Rio Theater in Santa Cruz.
WHEN: Friday, Jan. 11, at 7 p.m.

SANTA CRUZ WARRIORS PLAY TULSA 66

WHAT: Is that basketball? I think it's the new basketball team.

PLANET CRUZ COMEDY

WHAT: A two hour comedy show with special guest Diane Amos (the Pine-Sol lady), as well as Zach Friend, Will Durst and many more!
WHERE: Rio Theater in Santa Cruz.
WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
PRICE: $18/adv and $23/ door.

ZE FRANK WEEKEND AT THE MAH

WHAT: Hands-on workshops all weekend, including 2D printing with Michael Allen, illustration with Stefan Bucher, and games with the Internet personality Ze frank of A Show with Ze Frank.
WHERE: Museum of Art and History
WHEN: Saturday, Jan. 12 from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
PRICE: FREE and open to the public!

SIN SISTERS BURLESQUE SHOW

WHAT: If it's cold outside on Saturday night, the Catalyst Atrium will definitely be the hottest place to be. The Sin Sisters are professional dancers trained to "set your soul on fire!"
WHERE: The Catalyst in downtown Santa Cruz.
WHEN: Saturday, Jan 12. 9 p.m./doors and 9:30 p.m./show.
PRICE: $15/adv, $20/door.

BIRDHOUSE FAREWELL SHOW!

WHAT: The rumor on the street is that this Santa Cruz-based favorite is splitting up. But not before playing two last shows at the Crepe Place. (NOTE: They are also playing on Friday night!) The band, which has amassed quite a following to steam up the windows of the Crepe Place, blends country and rock with jazz. Birdhouse plays with the Tumbleweed Wanderers, an Oakland-based soul, folk and banjo rock.
WHERE: The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz.
WHEN: Friday Jan. 11 and Sat, Jan 12 at 9 p.m.
PRICE: $10 

 

***SUN, JAN. 13: 

SANTA CRUZ ANTIQUE FAIRE

WHAT: 50 plus vendors selling awesome vintage and antique items.
WHERE: Downtown Santa Cruz on Lincoln Street and the adjacent parking lot (where the Wednesday Farmers Market is.)
WHEN: Sunday, Jan. 13, and every second Sunday of the month, from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

 

SEASIDE CRAFTS AT THE SEYMOUR CENTER

WHAT: Fun, educational and hands-on activities for all ages.
WHERE: Seymour Marine Discovery Center
WHEN: Sunday, Jan. 13 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. 
PRICE: $4-$6, or free for members and UCSC students.
