BREAKING: Police said all water activities in the area will be prohibited until sunrise on July 15.
SANTA CRUZ, CA — A seasoned kayaker was miraculously uninjured after his vessel was attacked by a large shark Tuesday morning, Santa Cruz police officials said. The disturbing attack was reported just after 11 a.m. near West Cliff and Pelton Avenue. The kayaker was in the water about a quarter-mile out from Steamer Lane at the time of the attack.
Police said the kayak was badly damaged during the incident. Officials posted a photo via social media of Steve Lawson, posing with his kayak and rescuers. Lawson was launched into the water following the attack, according to a report from KSBW.
Officials said staff will be monitoring the water and signs will be posted along the beaches near the attack site for four days, in accordance with the Santa Cruz County Shark Incident Action Plan. All water activities within a 1-mile radius of the coastline will be prohibited until sunrise on Saturday, July 15, officials said.
