SANTA CRUZ, CA — A Santa Cruz Fire Department ladder truck was called early Saturday morning for help in the rescue of a man who is accused of trespassing onto the roof of a card room on Pacific Avenue, the Santa Cruz Police Department said.

A man and woman were drunkenly trespassing on the roof around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police spokesperson Joyce Blaschke wrote. The woman climbed down from the roof on a ladder and was arrested on suspicion of public intoxication, but the man other threw up and passed out, police said.

Fire crews strapped him into a stokes litter — a coffin-shaped rescue basket — and lowered him to safety. He became belligerent while in a sobering center and was taken to jail, police said.
