Natural Herbal Highs That Stimulate, Sedate, Arouse, & Enlighten
A new shop recently opened in downtown Santa Cruz that specializes in unique herbal blends that safely simulate the effects of popular recreational drugs.

Therapeutic herbalists, aspiring shamans, health-conscious ravers, sexual enthusiasts, and anyone looking for safe herbal alternatives to dangerous, addictive, or illegal drugs will be delighted to learn about the new and unusual herb shop that recently opened in downtown Santa Cruz. The Happy High Herb Shop, located at 227 Cathcart Street, carries a wide array of exotic herbs from around the world that promise to make you happier, healthier, hornier, and higher.
Unlike the conventional nutritional supplement stores in Santa Cruz--like The Herb Room, Staff of Life, and the New Leaf markets, which also carry a bounty of wonderful herbs--the Happy High Herb Shop focuses it’s inventory primarily on synergistic herbal combinations.
Some of the herbs that they carry have stimulating and energizing effects, while others are mellowing, relaxing, and sedating. They also offer botanical blends that have sexually-arousing effects, and others that safely elevate awareness into higher realms.

One of the main goals of the shop is to provide safe, natural, and legal alternatives to dangerous, addictive, or illegal drugs, and to help people overcome addiction problems. I visited the store last week and was truly impressed by their unusual selection of herbs.
You’ll find a number of interesting herbs at The Happy High Herb Shop that you won’t find at the conventional herb shops in town, like blue lotus flower and kratom. The Australian herbalist and entrepreneur who started the Happy High Herb Shops (there are a number of them around the world), Ray Thorpe, wrote a book called Happy High Herbs, which summarizes the effects and necessary precautions for using the different herbs that are available in the store, which I highly recommend.

I spoke with the friendly and knowledgeable owners of The Happy High Herb Shop, Catheryn BeVier and Cynthia Nelson, who were both excited about their new business venture. They showed me around their shop and pointed out how all their herbs are categorized into different sections, depending on what sort of effects one is interested in. There are sections in the shop marked “Romance,” “Health,” “Energy,” “Smoking,” and “Party,” so that people check out the specific area that interests them.
“We are all about addiction solutions, harm reduction, and party alternatives,” Catheryn told me. “If folks are in need of mood enhancers then they are better off using safe herbal tonics. At least you wake up feeling good on herbs with no hangovers! We’re here to help people overcome their addictions, whether it be cannabis, tobacco, alcohol, etc., and we get quite a few herbalists sending in their patients for one herb or another.”
All of the products in the store are legally available in other herb shops, smoke shops, or internet suppliers of shamanic plants--but it’s more than just charming and convenient to have them all available together in one central location downtown, as they also specialize in creating unique synergistic herbal blends--with names like “Eclipse Supreme,” “Blue Lagoon,” and “Buzz”--that are designed to safely simulate the effects of popular recreational drugs, like cannabis, ecstasy, tranquilizers, amphetamines.
Some of their herbal blends are also designed to enhance sexual potency like Viagra, or to work as aphrodisiacs or cognitive enhancers. If you have any questions about what herbs would work best for you, Catheryn and Cynthia will be more than happy to help.
“Our alternatives are in natural herb capsules and tincture form. They are blends of herbs that are non-addictive with no dangerous side-effects. Instead of using unhealthy drugs to get a “lift,” our party highs are made from herbs like guarana, mate, and kola, that give great clean energy, because they contain herbs to support the nervous system. They don’t tire the body like most other stimulants,” Catheryn said.
