Learn about the man behind the character. While many might only know of Ed Ricketts through John Steinbeck's portrayal of him as the character "Doc Ricketts" in such beloved tales as Cannery Row, Sweet Thursday, and The Log of the Sea of Cortez, there is much more to be known about the man himself. At this lecture, learn about local legend Ed Ricketts and his colleague Jack Calvin in their efforts to publish their seminal work, Between Pacific Tides. Now hailed as pioneers of modern marine ecology, Ricketts & Calvin may have been delayed for their then-unconventional approach. The discovery of numerous letters between Ricketts, Calvin, publishers, and specialists provide insight into the arduous 10 year process of publishing this work.
