New Leaf Community Markets Collect for Hurricane Harvey Relief

Pass-through donations being collected at the cash register.

New Leaf Community Market stores in Santa Cruz and Capitola will be collecting pass-through donations at the cash register for the Houston Food Bank, named top charity in Texas by Charity Navigator for financial performance and accountability. Every dollar donated provides three meals for people whose lives were upended by Hurricane Harvey.

This Category 3 Hurricane was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year drought in which no hurricanes made landfall at such an intensity in the country.

FEMA director Brock Long called Harvey the worst disaster in Texas history, and expected the recovery to take many years. Economic losses are preliminarily estimated at between $70 to $200 billion, with a large portion of the losses sustained by uninsured homeowners.
