Pi Day goes a la MOD on 3-14-15
Crafts, cookies and demonstrations part of Children's Museum honoring this 100-year Math event

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Circle around as Pi goes a la MOD for International Pi Day on Saturday (3.14.15). From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be crafts, cookies and demonstrations at the Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery in celebration of the mathematical number Pi — the ratio of a circle’s diameter to its circumference. This year’s Pi Day falls on 3.14.15, which represents the first 5 digits of Pi. It will be 100 years before that sequence occurs again.
Children will be able to create Pi necklaces, Pi headbands and cityscapes inspired by Pi, while enjoying cookies inspired by this fantastic never-ending number. At 11 a.m., Museum staff will lead a procession of children through the mall to the circle near the Capitola Mall’s food court for a walking Pi demonstration.
Pi Day, recognized in 2009 by the U.S. House of Representatives, was created to help convince the world that math is fun. Pi is a favorite number among mathematicians. It is considered an “irrational” number — which in math means it never ends and the sequence of digits never repeats. Learn about the history Pi Day at piday.org
