Santa Cruz Backyard Burn Season Ends Friday

Last year's record-setting fire season killed one person and scorched more than 85,500 acres in the Santa Cruz-San Mateo region.

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Friday is the last day that backyard burns are acceptable in Santa Cruz.

The Santa Cruz Fire Department asked the public to report illegal burns to 911.

In 2020, the CZU August Lightning Complex scorched more than 85,500 acres across Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties killed one person and destroyed nearly 1,500 buildings.
