Santa Cruz Mayor Proclaims National Public Works Week May 17-23

SANTA CRUZ —Santa Cruz Mayor Justin Cummings has proclaimed the week of May 17-23 as National Public Works Week in honor of the professionals who work to maintain and improve the quality of life in Santa Cruz and keep essential services running year-round.

“I urge all our citizens to celebrate the important projects and daily services of our dedicated Public Works professionals and recognize the substantial contributions they make in protecting our health, safety and quality of life — now in these challenging days of the COVID-19 pandemic, and always.”

The American Public Works Association has celebrated the annual National Public Works Week since 1960. This year’s theme, “The Rhythm of Public Works,” recognizes the orchestra of Public Works services in engineering design, traffic engineering and maintenance, wastewater and storm water management, flood control, street and facilities maintenance, solid waste management, waste reduction programs, parking control and more.

These services could not be provided without the efforts of City engineers, sanitation and wastewater crews, parking services, streets, fleet and operations teams, environmental compliance employees and transportation engineering staff — all of whom continue to serve the community during the coronavirus outbreak.
