Santa Cruz Police: Thieves Targeting Particular Car Model
Catalytic converters — a relatively easy-to-steal, high value item located behind a car's exhaust pipe — are commonly stolen in Santa Cruz.
SANTA CRUZ, CA — Toyota Prius owners, beware: Thieves are targeting this type of car more than others, Santa Cruz police say.
While Priuses are the most commonly stolen car in Santa Cruz, catalytic converter thefts in general continue to be a problem in the city, police said. Such thefts can cost drivers $2,000 to $3,000.
Catalytic converters are a high-value item that can be stolen in a minute and traded for cash at a chop shop or metal recycler. Catalytic converters control exhaust emissions and can be found behind an exhaust pipe.

Prius catalytic converters are particularly valuable because they're less likely to be corroded, Bay Area News Group reported. This is because Priuses also rely on an electric motor, not just a gas engine alone.
Police advise the public to park in a garage, or in lighted and visible areas. Set your car alarm to go off if vibration is detected, or undergo protective measures, such as installing a protective device to clamp around the converter or having the bolts welded shut and extra metal welded to the exhaust system, police said.
