SANTA CRUZ, CA — Joanne Parker wanted a dog for her 90th birthday. Not for herself, but to aid Santa Cruz Police Department officers in their crime-fighting endeavors.

So she rounded up her friends and asked them to donate to the SCPD K-9 fund, in lieu of presents, department spokesperson Joyce Blaschke wrote on Facebook. They raised $2,700.

Parker paid a visit to the department Monday to learn more about K-9s and their work from handlers.

"Joanne spoiled both K-9s with scratches behind the ears and received dog kisses in return," Blaschke wrote.

Parker met with K-9s Luna and Ryder. Ryder joined the department earlier this year thanks to a $10,000 donation from Tiki Delamora, who named the dog, Blaschke wrote.
