SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office paid tribute to Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller Monday by sharing snippets of his career through photos.
The memorial came a month after the 14-year sheriff's office veteran was ambushed and fatally shot while responding to a call in Ben Lomond, the sheriff's office said.
"It has been one month without Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller walking our halls," the sheriff's office said. "One month without seeing that smile from ear-to-ear or hearing that infectious laugh. One month full of honoring the man and law enforcement officer you were."

The slideshow included more formal photos of Gutzwiller in uniform, as well as family pictures and lighthearted photos of the sergeant posing with his leg propped up on a sheriff's office car.
The video included audio from Gutzwiller's final dispatch call played at his memorial service— a law enforcement tradition in which dispatchers honor the legacy of fallen officers upon their departure.

"He laid down his life for the community, his smile would light up any room," the dispatcher said.
"You are the individual every law enforcement officer strives to mirror and everything the sheriff's office represents. Your dedication and love for your community was only exceeded by the love you had for your family."
The sheriff's office said its ranks would strive to be like Gutzwiller.
"We will continue to stand for justice and protect this community the way you did for 14 years," the sheriff's office said.
