Shelters Start To Empty As Residents Return Home

Just a third of Santa Cruz County shelter guests remain as others return home to areas deemed safe amid the CZU August Lightning Complex.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Two-thirds of evacuated Santa Cruz County residents in shelters have returned home, the county said.

About 500 residents remain at shelters, which are starting to wind down operations, the county said. The county will shift its focus to serving residents who will need long-term help securing shelter.

More than 920 homes have been destroyed in the CZU August Lightning Complex fires, most of which were located in Santa Cruz County.

The following shelters remain open:

  • Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds in Watsonville
  • Seventh Day Adventists Conference Grounds in Soquel
  • Cabrillo College in Aptos
  • Harbor High School in Santa Cruz
  • Simpkins Family Swim Center in Live Oak
