SLIDESHOW: UCSC Quiet After Threats of Violence
No major incidents reported on campus on day graffiti warned of attacks.
All was quiet on the UC Santa Cruz campus Tuesday, despite notifications from campus officials that threatening graffiti warned of violence.
“There were no incidents of the nature we were worried about,” said Jim Burns, the university’s director of public information at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. “At least, not at this point.”
Several classes were canceled or moved off campus, he said.

Both the Santa Cruz Police Department and Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office said they were available on an on-call basis.
“We’re on standby for UCSC,” said Dan Campos, with the sheriff’s office. “If they need us, we’ll come.”

On Jan. 11, Executive Vice Chancellor Alison Galloway wrote a letter to students and staff warning that threatening graffiti was found before winter break in the Social Sciences 2 building. That graffiti warned that acts of violence would occur Jan. 18.
Burns said the incident gave the university the chance to emphasize its "see something, say something" type of initiative.
“We didn’t want to panic people—we wanted people to pay attention,” he said. “This graffiti incident provided us with an opportunity to remind people that safety is everyone’s business.”
